All About Pink Eye (also known as bacterial conjunctivitis)

Pink eye is an inflammation of the conjunctiva of the eye, which is the clear thin membrane that covers the eyeball and the inside of the eyelids. Although inflammation of the conjunctiva can have several causes, it may be due to infection by bacteria. This is sometimes called pink eye because the white part of the eye becomes red and irritated looking.

Pink eye is common in children and is easily spread from one child to another or to an adult. That's why it's important to get treatment as soon as possible. A person may feel as if something is in his or her eye, but it is important not to rub or scratch the eyes. This can make it worse or increase the likelihood of the infection spreading to another person. With the right treatment, pink eye is not serious and will clear up within a few days.
