Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my healthcare provider prescribe QUIXIN®?
Your healthcare provider has prescribed QUIXIN® antibacterial eye drops to treat a bacterial infection that causes pink eye. It is important to use the eyedrops for the entire time that your healthcare provider has instructed, even if it looks like the infection is gone. Sometimes your eye will feel and look better, but the bacteria are not totally gone. So use QUIXIN® for the exact number of days that your healthcare provider tells you to.
Are there any side effects with QUIXIN®?
As with any medication, side effects may occur with QUIXIN®. Usually, side effects seen with QUIXIN® are mild or moderate in severity. Treatment with QUIXIN® is comfortable, with little or no stinging of the eyes.
In studies of QUIXIN®, the following side effects occurred in 1% - 3% of people using QUIXIN®: decreased vision for a short period of time, fever, feeling that something is in the eye, headache, burning of the eye for a short period of time, pain or discomfort of the eye, inflammation of the pharynx or throat, and discomfort from bright lights. Other side effects that occurred in less than 1% of people using QUIXIN® were allergic reactions, swelling of the eyelid, dryness of the eye, and itching of the eye.
Is QUIXIN® safe for use in children?
QUIXIN® has been approved for use in children 1 year of age and older.
How often do I put QUIXIN® in the affected eye(s)?
Always use QUIXIN® as directed by your healthcare provider. For Days 1 and 2, one to two drops should be put in the affected eye(s) every 2 hours while awake, up to 8 times a day. For Days 3 to 7, one to two drops should be put in the affected eye(s) every 4 hours while awake, up to 4 times a day.
How can I prevent the spread of Bacterial Conjunctivitis?
Cleanliness is very important for preventing the spread of bacterial conjunctivitis. The area around the affected eye(s) should be kept as clean as possible. This means no touching or rubbing the eyes. If your child does touch his or her eyes, make sure he or she washes his or her hands. Make sure towels, clothes, and pillowcases are washed frequently.
For an adult, the same steps should be taken as for children. In addition, eye cosmetics, especially mascara, should be discarded after an infection is discovered. It's also a good idea to not share cosmetics or other personal items that are used near the eyes. People who wear contact lenses should follow the healthcare provider’s instructions regarding proper use and cleaning procedures. To keep from contaminating the tip of the QUIXIN® dropper, it should not touch any part of your eye or face.
